Chapter 27
A scream echoed from a nearby room. Drayton muttered something to a soldier, who raced out the door. Moments later, the scream stopped.
Drayton dipped the iron rod in the bucket of smouldering coals. âLast chance, Leon. Tell me what was in the chamber or share Pierceâs fate.â
Pierceâs blood spread across the floor, tickling the tips of Leonâs bare toes. Leon remembered the boyâs defiant glare, and he tried to capture the same anger, righteousness, and bravery as he scowled at the inquisitor.
An angel cares for the greater good. An angel cares naught for himself.
âGo to hell,â Leon said.
Drayton chuckled. He took the rod out of the coals and pressed it into Leonâs thigh. Leon screamed until his throat turned raw â
Drayton removed the iron, but the agony continued. âTell me what was in the chamber.â
Leonâs eyes watered. A pink blister throbbed on his thigh and blood filled his aching mouth. Heâd bit his tongue.
âFive seconds.â Drayton held the smouldering iron an inch from Leonâs thigh. âThen you get it again.â
Pain pulsed through Leonâs leg and he whimpered. He thought of Juliana and Blas.
He thought of the battle heâd fled.
He thought of the friends heâd betrayed.
âFour seconds â¦â said Drayton.
He thought of slicing off his wings, and his guilty joy at surviving all those years after the War, while angelsâ heads appeared on stakes around Paya.
âThree â¦â
Didnât take much to conjure those memories.
They haunted him always.
Reminded him what he was.
A horrible friend.
A false angel.
A traitor.
âTwo â¦â
Tears streaked down Leonâs face. If he told Drayton what was in the chamber, what did it matter? Heâd always been spineless. No one could say heâd gone against form.
Heâd always been a coward.
And always would be.
âOneââ
âP-p-please!â said Leon. âIâll tell you! There was an inscription: âThis steel garden is a lonely place, watered by legacies of pain. May ye not suffer its embrace for it is truly the angelâs bane. Yet in this field of speeding death, safety ye will find, in the flowing path of the Archangelâs breath.ââ
Drayton grabbed Leonâs hair and yanked up his head to peer into Leonâs eyes. âWhere does this riddle lead to?â
âD-d-donât know.â
Drayton stabbed the iron onto Leonâs thigh, making Leon shriek. His leg twitched and he sobbed â
âThe asteroid b-b-belt!â Leon said.
Drayton raised the rod so that it hovered above Leonâs thigh. âMore precision.â
âIn the Mallean asteroids â in the mining c-c-colonies, thereâs a ring-shaped asteroid. Paracelsus-7. A jetstream passes through it.â
Leon gaped. Until then, he hadnât known the answer, but somehow the searing pain had dragged the truth from him.
âConvicts mine zinc from Paracelsus-7.â Drayton frowned. âHow do you know itâs part of the Path?â
âItâs in the r-r-riddle. âSteel gardenâ â zincâs a steel. âLegacies of painâ â slaves and convicts have mined the asteroids for centuries. Thatâs why you donât want to âsuffer its embrace.â Asteroids are âthe angelâs bane,â because they can kill us in collisions. The asteroids orbit faster than the discs, making them a âfield of speeding death,â and the âArchangelâs breathâ refers to jetstreams.
